Inherent structure of a molten salt
We calculated the inherent structure of a model melt of zinc ~II! bromide over a wide range of densities. Stable, metastable, and unstable branches were obtained for the zero temperature pressure–volume isotherm of the inherent structure. The pressure–volume isotherm, the void distribution, and the structure factor were used to identify the spinodal, independent of any model equation of state. ...
متن کاملMolten-salt Reactor Chemistry
This document summarizes the large program of chemical research and development which led to selection of fuel and coolant compositions for the Molten-Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) and for subsequent reactors of this type. Chemical behavior of the LiF-BeFrZrFrUF4 fuel mixture and behavior of fission products during power operation of MSRE are presented. A discussion of the chemical reactions w...
متن کاملMolten uranium dioxide structure and dynamics.
Uranium dioxide (UO2) is the major nuclear fuel component of fission power reactors. A key concern during severe accidents is the melting and leakage of radioactive UO2 as it corrodes through its zirconium cladding and steel containment. Yet, the very high temperatures (>3140 kelvin) and chemical reactivity of molten UO2 have prevented structural studies. In this work, we combine laser heating,...
متن کاملFLOW BEHAVIOR OF MOLTEN METAL IN ALUMINUM LFC PROCESS
The effects of gating system and pattern geometry on the metal flow in the lost foam casting (LFC) process have been investigated using glass covered mold and video recording system. Unlike convectional casting process, the type of the gating system showed little effect on fillability in lost foam, but pattern thickness had large effect on mold filling. The mold filling behavior seems to be con...
متن کاملThe Molten Salt Reactor Adventure
A personal history of the development of molten-salt reactors in the United States is presented. The initial goal was an aircraft propulsion reactor, and a molten fluoride-fueled Aircraft Reactor Experiment was operated at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1954. In 1956, the objective shifted to civilian nuclear power, and reactor concepts were developed using a circulating UF4-ThF4 fuel, graphi...
